Hajduk Veljko Petrović (1780 - 1813), the Krajina Duke, is known for his numerous feats defending the Negotin Krajina and the eastern borders of Serbia. His life motto, "I give my head, but not the Krajina," along with his personal courage and heroism, quickly made him one of the greatest Serbian heroes, with songs sung about him and his legend growing even during his lifetime. Serbian leader Karađorđe appointed him as a duke and entrusted him to defend Negotin, where he heroically fell defending the Krajina from the Turks.
Serbia's greatest composer, Mokranjac, dedicated his VI "Rukovet" to him.
The house that houses the Museum of Hajduk Veljko was built in the 1860s by the nobleman Todorče of Negotin. Hajduk Veljko's gunpowder magazine, known as Barutana, is located in the courtyard of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Negotin. Built of stone, it has retained its authentic appearance to this day. It was part of the "Baba Finka" fortress, and today, it is its only remaining part, as the fortress was demolished in 1883.
The museum preserves numerous objects dedicated to the heroism, life, and work of Hajduk Veljko.
The museum exhibits weapons from the First Serbian Uprising, as well as numerous household items dating back to the 19th century. There are also numerous artifacts inspired by the artistic representation of Hajduk Veljko, a fighter for freedom.
