Near Kladovo, on the banks of the Danube, stands the medieval Fetislam Fortress, a witness to turbulent history through the ages. This fortress seems like a gateway welcoming travelers from the west, introducing them to the mystical world of the past.
By the order of Suleiman the Magnificent, the fortress was built in 1524 with two fortifications called the Small and the Great Fortress or Kastel. During the 19th century, amid the Serbian-Turkish conflicts, this complex alternated between Serbian and Turkish rule. Tablets were subsequently placed with inscriptions praising the then Sultan, Mahmud II.
Today, the entire complex covers 16 hectares - the Great Fortress consists of six bastions connected by ramparts, passages, and drawbridges crossing over the surrounding moat. The Small Fortress is located closer to the riverbank, and remnants of ramparts, three gates, streets, houses, and armories are preserved.
Within the fortress, many buildings and structures of various purposes have been discovered, testifying to the vibrant life that unfolded within the walls. The older, smaller fortress occupies the highest part of the terrain near the riverbank, providing visitors with a unique view of the surrounding landscapes.
Fetislam Fortress carries within it a rich history. Throughout the centuries, it often changed masters who demolished, rebuilt, and adapted it to their military-strategic needs.
Today, Fetislam Fortress has been renovated and beautifully arranged for tourists. Visitors have the opportunity to step into the past exploring these walls and the spirit of time through every stone of the fortress. The diversity of architecture and the scenes offered from the fortress walls bring to life stories of the past, from military strategies to everyday life.
Where is it located?
It is located 500 meters from the center of Kladovo, on the banks of the Danube. The Danube promenade leads directly to the fortress.
How to get there?
Via Belgrade - Požarevac - Kladovo (via Golubac, Donji Milanovac): roads 34, 35. Travel via the Djerdap highway M-25. From the center of Kladovo, you can reach the fortress on foot in 20 minutes, starting from 22. septembra street, via road 35.

Via Niš (via Zaječar): road 35.
