When you step into the courtyard and enter the home where Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac originated, time takes you back to the 19th century.
Nestled in the heart of Negotin, shielded from the passage of time, awaits the birth house of one of the most significant musical figures in Serbia, composer Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac. In this house, our giant took his first steps, spoke his first words, and learned his first notes and rhythms.
As you listen to "Rukoveti," here you can see the piano Mokranjac personally played, the writing desk with a silver inkwell and quill, family portraits, the hearth that remains authentic...
Mokranjac was born in Negotin on January 9, 1856. He introduced the Serbian national spirit into the world of artistic music. He is considered the most significant musical creator of Serbian romanticism. He is listed among the top one hundred most significant Serbs according to the selection of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (1993).
His most famous works include: "Rukoveti," "Primorski napevi," "Liturgija," "Opelo," "Kozar," "Statije," and others. In 1899, he founded the first permanent music school in Belgrade. He was a collector of folk melodies, both secular and church, about which he wrote the first folklore studies, thus being considered the founder of Serbian musicology. He contributed to the establishment of the "Union of Singing Societies" and the "First String Quartet."
Today, Mokranjac's house has the status of a monument of culture of exceptional importance. If you haven't visited it yet, don't miss the opportunity.
