Experience the energy of rock and roll! August is the month of rock festivals in Serbia, and Gitarijada in Zaječar is one you shouldn't miss!
Gitarijada is one of the oldest rock festivals in the Balkans. It has been held in Zaječar since 1966, lasting for a few days. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, it grew from a local event to the most significant festival of demo bands in the former Yugoslavia. Over the years, Gitarijada has become the host to some of the most famous international and domestic rock and roll acts: Billy Idol, The Cult, Guano Apes, Steve Lukather, Prljavo Kazalište, Atomsko sklonište, Parni valjak, Zabranjeno pušenje, Vlatko Stefanovski, Nightfall, Dubioza kolektiv...
The festival program includes a competition for demo bands and a non-competitive part featuring established domestic bands as well as international rock groups.
Gitarijada also offers numerous side events such as: motorcycle gatherings, International Rock Photography Exhibition, film screenings, exhibitions, book promotions, and panel discussions. Gitarijada in Zaječar has become a recognizable brand that attracts bands and audiences from all over Serbia, the former Yugoslavia, and beyond with the vibrations of rock music. Some now well-known rock bands gained credibility and fame at the Zaječar Gitarijada, as decided by the jury and the audience.
The venue for Gitarijada has changed as the event has grown, with the former spaces of the Youth Center and the Army House being replaced by the Sports Hall and the Timok Stadium. In recent years, this rock spectacle has been held in August at Kraljevica, in an enclosed space next to the city fairground.
Where is it located and how to get there?
Gitarijada takes place at Kraljevica, a 5-10 minute walk from the city center.
