Not far from the center of Kladovo, Fortress Diana stands as an enduring guardian of time and a witness to the turbulent epochs of this area. With roots dating back to the 1st century AD, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan, this archaeological site exudes significant historical importance, natural beauty, and a strong defensive past.
The Roman castrum Diana was built on a high rock above the Danube, in the place of Karataš near the village of Sip, near Kladovo. Originally erected to defend the territory of the riverbank, along the natural border with Romania, it bears the scars of time and testifies to the long-standing struggle to preserve this strategically important position.
In the 5th century, the fortress fell under the onslaught of Hunnic conquest, suffering serious damage. However, in 530 AD, Emperor Justinian restored Fortress Diana, giving it new life and the opportunity to continue its historical journey.
The tumultuous historical past of this site continued through Avar-Slavic invasions in the late 6th and early 7th centuries, when the fortress was once again subjected to destruction. However, from the ashes of the past emerges a new image - Fortress Diana as an economic center during the next six centuries of existence. Through archaeological excavations, impressive evidence of economic prosperity has been discovered, with a harbor and port that animated trade along the Danube.
On the very fortress, archaeologists have unearthed treasures that speak of bygone centuries. A statue of the god Thoth, with an engraved inscription ("STATIO CATARACTARUM DIANA" - meaning "River station Diana"), a multi-ship building, the fortress gate, vessels, tools, utensils, and numerous artifacts tell the story of life and culture of our ancestors.
Fortress Diana is an archaeological site of great significance, whose rich archaeological heritage has been protected by the Republic of Serbia as a monument of exceptional importance.

Via Belgrade - Požarevac - Kladovo (via Golubac, Donji Milanovac) roads 34, 35. Travel via the Đerdap highway M-25.
Via Belgrade - Paraćin - Kladovo (via Zaječar): roads A-1, 36, 35.
Via Niš (via Zaječar) road 35.
From Kladovo, you can reach the fortress via road 35/E771 through the villages of Kladušnica and Davidovac.
