Five kilometers downstream from Kladovo, on the right bank of the Danube, lie the remains of the 1,900-year-old piers of Trajan's Bridge.
Trajan's Bridge was a monumental structure over the Danube River in the part where it flows through the Đerdap Gorge. It connected Upper Moesia and Dacia (present-day Serbia and Romania) during the Roman Empire. The bridge was built by the order of the Roman Emperor Marcus Ulpius Nerva Trajan. It was ceremonially opened in 105 AD on the Danube, during the Second Dacian Campaign of the Roman Emperor Trajan.
The length of the bridge was 1,097.5 meters, and for about 1,000 years, it was considered the longest bridge ever built in the world. It was located near the present-day village of Kostol near Kladovo on the Serbian side and Turnu Severin on the Romanian side. The bridge was designed by the greatest architect of that time, Apollodorus of Damascus. The archaeological remains of Trajan's Bridge and the Roman settlement of Pontes are located about 5 km from Kladovo, east of the village of Kostol. The bridge ranks among the most significant works of Roman engineering, and the remains of the piers bear witness to the centuries that shaped the Balkans.
