Do you know why Knjaževac was awarded the title of "Exceptional Destination of Europe" in 2014? It's because of the nurturing of folk traditions, such as the event "Prayer under Midžor".
If you find yourself in the villages of Vrtovac and Balta Berilovac, at the foot of Stara Planina, during the "Prayer under Midžor" event, you will feel as if time has stopped.
The event lasts for two days. It begins on St. George's Day, May 6th, in the village of Vrtovac. It is characterized by the richness and diversity of the folk customs of Stara Planina. A ritual ceremony celebrates the power of nature, which is transferred to people, animals, and crops. On St. George's Day, flowers and medicinal herbs are gathered and wreaths are made. Weaving wreaths by the river holds symbolic significance: the circle represents the natural process of the flow of life and its renewal.
Then, the event continues with the shearing of sheep and a procession - a ritual procession around the church. The locals sanctify food while the space around the church is adorned with flowers. The "Planinka" - a woman representing the spirit of nature - is also adorned with flowers.
On the second day of the event, May 7th, the locals go to the village of Balta Berilovac, and the festivities begin with a blessing and a call to "Ćaje" - the commander of the St. George's festivities and the people. This is followed by a cultural and artistic program, shepherd's dances, the selection of the most beautiful shepherdess, and a competition in preparing old dishes and specialties.
