Nestled amidst towering mountains, intersected by rivers and bridges, Knjaževac is renowned as the "Little Venice." The testament to its beauty and significance throughout history is best witnessed at the Knjaževac Local Museum, which meticulously preserves the cultural heritage of this region.
The building housing the Knjaževac Local Museum was once the home of the Sibinović family, former owners of the "Dobra sreća" mine. Today, it is a place where history comes alive in a unique way.
Here, you can explore exhibits ranging from prehistory, the Roman era, Byzantium, the Middle Ages, the Turkish period, to the era of the Timok Rebellion.
In 1970, at the initiative of teacher Nikola Micić Landa, Knjaževac received a historical-museum collection, established at the Main Library. A year later, the city took over the care of antiquities and items from nearby sites. The museum collection was officially opened to the public in 1975, and it began operating as an independent cultural institution in 1980 under the name Knjaževac Local Museum.
Over the decades, the Knjaževac Local Museum has evolved into a comprehensive entity, comprising departments for archaeology, ethnology, cultural history, art history, conservation, photo documentation, and guiding services.
The Homeland Museum comprises several buildings::
- The main building at Karađorđeva 15, which houses the permanent exhibition and gallery,
- The City Museum in the House of Ace Stanojević,
- Arheo-Ethno Park Ravna, the museum's annex in the village of Ravna,
- Timacum Minus, the archaeological site under the jurisdiction of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, which is managed by the Homeland Museum of Knjaževac.
A particularly valuable treasure of the museum in Knjaževac is the ethnological collection of two-thread socks, consisting of 420 ethnographic items from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Here, you can also view a unique album in the world with 240 socks drawn in natural color and size. The ethnographic collection of two-thread socks was declared a cultural monument of Serbia in 1965.
