The traditional night ascent to Rtanj attracts an increasing number of tourists, adventurers, and mountaineers each year, and for many, this is one of the favorite mountaineering activities.
At the top of Rtanj – Šiljak (1,565 meters above sea level), stands the ruins of the former Church of St. George. Besides being located at the highest peak of Rtanj, this church is interesting because it was built in 1936 with the help of 1000 workers by Greta Minh, the wife of the owner of the Rtanj mine, Julius Minh, in memory of her late husband. Today, only ruins remain at this site as gold seekers have destroyed it several times.
The ascent to the top of Rtanj is organized just before sunrise, and it is enjoyed by mountaineers, recreational hikers, and visitors from all over Serbia.
The event takes place on Vidovdan (June 27/28).
The trail starts from the village of Rtanj, following a 7.2 km path along the southern side of the mountain, leading through a forest path to the beginning of the first hairpin turn. After about 4 hours of walking, you reach the peak of Šiljak. In addition to the magnificent view and clean air, this event is unique for the moments of sunrise at the top and the extraordinary calming energy it exudes.
