The Church of the Holy Mother of God is located in the village of Donja Kamenica, 14 kilometers southeast of Knjaževac. It is the endowment of an unknown nobleman and dates back to the first half of the 14th century.
This church represents the most original and valuable artistic monument of the Timok Diocese. Its foundation is in the shape of an inscribed cross. The church is vaulted with a semi-circular dome, and its central dome rests on pendentives. It belongs to a group of sacred buildings in late Byzantine architecture, and certain elements from that period can be recognized.
The church's frescoes are of exceptional value, both stylistically and iconographically. Some of the frescoes are unique in Serbian medieval painting. It is believed that two masters painted the frescoes, with special emphasis on the donor compositions and portraits of the nobleman, rich in details depicting their attire. Of great artistic value are the depictions of the "Last Supper," "Annunciation," "Mother of God Odigitria with Christ," "Dormition of the Theotokos," the portrayal of Christ the Lamb (i.e., the Adoration of the Lamb in the altar apse), and the unique depiction of the embraced Holy Warriors Theodore the Tyro and Theodore Stratilates on horseback, as well as cycles from the life of Saint Petka.
